A front-end developer builds the parts of websites and web applications that users see and interact with. The role matters because speed, accessibility and usability on screen directly affect conversions, customer satisfaction and brand perception. Typical responsibilities include: turn design mockups into responsive, accessible web pages and components; build interface features using a modern JavaScript framework; connect interfaces to back-end APIs and handle data states.
Look for javaScript, HTML and CSS, react, responsive design, web accessibility and browser testing. Experience with React, TypeScript, Figma, Git and Webpack is common in this role.
Yes. A front-end developer is one of the roles employers most often hire on contract, for projects, busy periods, leave cover and vacancies. Contract-to-hire is also an option if you want to work together before making a permanent offer.
Strong ones read design files accurately and spot usability problems, but they are not designers. Expect them to implement a designer’s work faithfully, suggest practical improvements and respect brand and accessibility standards. If you have no designer, plan for one separately.
Require the framework your codebase uses. React is the most common, but Angular and Vue are widespread too. Skilled developers switch frameworks with some ramp-up time, though matching your stack gets a contractor productive faster on short engagements.
