A brand director owns how a company looks, sounds and is perceived across every channel, setting the standards that creative, marketing and communications teams follow. The role protects brand consistency through growth, rebrands and new market launches. Typical responsibilities include: define brand positioning, voice and visual standards across all channels; approve campaign concepts and creative against brand guidelines; direct agencies, designers and writers on brand execution.
Look for brand strategy, positioning and messaging, creative direction, agency management, brand governance and budget management. Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, Frame.io, Asana and Brandfolder is common in this role.
It is possible, but most employers hire a brand director on a full-time basis because the role depends on continuity and long-term relationships. Contract-to-hire is a practical middle route if you want a trial period first.
A brand director owns positioning, voice and consistency across the business, while a creative director leads the visual and conceptual execution of campaigns. Companies with an unclear identity usually need brand leadership first. Companies with a settled brand and heavy campaign output often need a creative director.
It depends on how central brand is to the business. In most mid-sized companies the role reports to the CMO or VP of Marketing. In founder-led or consumer companies it often sits closer to the CEO, which gives it more authority over product and sales messaging.
